Note: Coverage for acupuncture varies widely from plan to plan. Contact your insurance plan to find out what is covered, if deductibles apply, and if there are any restrictions. For example, some plans will only approve acupuncture for anesthesia, or limit the number of yearly visits.
Despite rumors to the contrary, Medicare itself does NOT pay for acupuncture services. However, some Medicare Supplemental or Medicare Advantage plans offer acupuncture as an "extra" service. Again, ask your plan what they cover.
Unfortunately, TriCare does not pay for acupuncture at this time. Hopefully this will change going forward.
New Acupuncture Coverage in Maryland Starting in 2014 !In the 2013 session the Maryland General Assembly mandated that insurance plans in Maryland will include at least a limited acupuncture benefit, starting in 2014. Our best information is that this will include a minimum of 20 sessions a year for chronic pain. It's not clear as yet what (if any) restrictions will apply, and some plans will be exempt from this requirement. Check back here for updates, and ask your insurance carrier what acupuncture coverage they plan to offer in 2014.
